The Purchase of 14 F-16 Fighters Has Not Been Proven to be Justified

BRATISLAVA, June 25, 2021 (SITA) - The Defense Ministry failed to justify the purchase of all fourteen F-16 C/D Block 70 aircraft. These are the findings of the Supreme Audit Office, which also pointed out that the most expensive defense contract since the establishment of the Slovak Republic was not even approved in the House, like for instance, Bulgaria did.

The Supreme Audit Office points out that the selected option for replacing tactical aviation may not have been the most efficient solution since the value for money had not been assessed with other options. “Some options of Slovakia’s airspace protection had not been explored completely or even at all, for instance, airspace protection with NATINAMDS ((NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System) or procurement of more modern aircraft,” the Supreme Audit Office continues in its commentary. “Given the information available before the procurement of F-16 it appears that buying aircraft of the fourth generation compared with aircraft of the fifth generation might not have been the most efficient solution in terms of value for money,” the Supreme Audit Office pointed out.
