SAO maps life in municipalities: the application shows where transport, nursery schools and sewerage work
The top ten also includes other Bratislava and Košice boroughs such as Záhorská Bystrica or Košická Nová Ves, as well as smaller municipalities like Štiavnička or Košeca. From last year’s top ten, only Teplička nad Váhom and Košeca retained their leading positions, while others dropped in the ranking. Last year’s winner, the village of Gbeľany in the Žilina Region, also fell back. Conversely, Bratislava boroughs dominate the current ranking, occupying almost half of the places in the TOP 30. The reasons may include the completion of the new hospital in Lamač, as well as the almost 100% connection of inhabitants to public sewerage and better transport accessibility.
The Supreme Audit Office has expanded the MuMAP application with new indicators in the Quality of Life section, which has been running since last year and offers an interactive map of all Slovak municipalities. These are colour-coded (from red to green) according to their performance in ten areas – demographics, economic activity, healthcare, education, safety, environment, civic engagement, social care, culture, and most recently also transport. Citizens can use the search function to find their municipality and see a breakdown of the specific indicators included in the assessment. Each municipality can achieve a maximum of 3,000 points, with the final score showing to what extent it creates quality living conditions.
“Transport and access to basic infrastructure, such as sewerage or services in the form of nursery school capacity, as well as travel time to a hospital, are among the factors that directly affect the comfort of everyday life. Thanks to these and other indicators, citizens can compare data on demographics or economic activity of municipalities, while also gaining practical information they use every day,” explained the Office’s spokesperson, Daniela Bolech Dobáková.
The MuMAP application has been available free of charge on the SAO’s website for five years and enables the public to monitor the financial management of municipalities and towns. In addition to data on revenues, expenditures or use of EU funds, it also offers the results of audits carried out by the national authority for external audit, updated continuously after the completion of audits and adoption of corrective measures. Citizens thus gain an overview of the financial health of municipalities, their decision-making and the support provided during the COVID-19 pandemic – all in one place. The tool, developed in-house by the Office, today contains data on all 2,924 municipalities and provides access to almost 38,000 audit findings since 2012. Data is sourced from several institutions, such as the Statistical Office of the SR, the Slovak Centre of Scientific and Technical Information, the police or the Ministry of Environment. As these institutions publish data at different times, figures are updated several times a year, which may also change the ranking of municipalities accordingly.
